Want homemade jam without the hassle of canning? This 4 ingredient strawberry chia jam comes together in a pinch – no canning or refined sugar required.
Something you should know about me – I get seriously excited about fresh, summer produce. Maybe you’re the same way? After a winter filled with mediocre grocery store fruits and veggies, I’m always dying for something fresh come springtime. So when strawberry picking season rolls around, I am ALL OVER IT.
That’s why last weekend I drug my husband to a you-pick farm a few towns over from our house to pick as many fresh strawberries as I could get my hands on. We picked two baskets, which turned out to be over 10 pounds! (Side note: We paid less than $2 a pound picking them ourselves – totally worth a little bit of Saturday morning manual labor.)
But, of course, the big question was then… what exactly do you do with 10 pounds of strawberries? First on my list, after eating a bunch right out of the basket and also making some strawberry shortcake (because hello, what is summer without strawberry shortcake), was this super easy 4 ingredient strawberry chia jam.
Y’all, this jam could not be simpler. Even if you have never in your life made jam, you can make this jam. It doesn’t require you to boil any cans in a water bath or pressure cooker, and it comes together in only 15 minutes.
Unlike most jams, this recipe requires no refined sugar. Yep, this jam is sweetened with just a bit of honey and has only 4 ingredients – strawberries, honey, lemon juice, and chia seeds.
The trick to this jam is those chia seeds. Normally, you need to add lots of sugar and even some pectin to a jam recipe to help it set, but we need neither because the chia seeds actually swell in liquid and give the jam nearly the same set appearance. It will be a bit looser than your standard jam, but still perfectly spreadable.
If you’re thinking there’s no way your kids will go for jam that has chia seeds in it, I strongly encourage you to give it a try. The chia seeds just look like strawberry or raspberry seeds you’d find in any other jam, so kids (and adults) probably aren’t going to notice much difference. Plus, chia seeds are chock full of omega-3 fatty acids and fiber, giving this jam an extra nutritional boost too!
Now, because we’re not canning this jam, it does have to be stored in the fridge and eaten within about two weeks, but no worries. Your family with love this jam so much that it won’t even last that long!
So go get yourself some fresh strawberries, and follow these instructions to make this incredibly easy and perfectly delicious 4 Ingredient Strawberry Chia Jam.
