Good gut health is something that is so important, and yet, in my opinion, doesn’t get discussed nearly enough.
While there’s still a lot we don’t know about the bacteria in our gut (known as our microbiome), what we do know is that our microbiome can have a HUGE impact on our health.
Studies are beginning to find links between our gut bacteria and everything from digestive and autoimmune diseases, to allergies and even obesity. That’s a big deal!
And that’s why I was so excited to see that this month’s Recipe Redux was featuring creative recipes for good gut health. After all, with cold and flu season on the way, it’s never too early to think about ramping up your immune system by promoting a healthy gut.
One of the easiest ways to promote good gut health is to make sure your diet contains both probiotics (“good,” health-promoting bacteria) and prebiotics (foods that feed and nourish the “good” bacteria already in your gut). Additionally, making sure your diet has an adequate amount of fiber can go a long way toward making sure your digestive health is up to par.
For an easy way to get in some extra prebiotics, probiotics, and fiber into your family’s diet this fall, try a pumpkin spice smoothie!
This pumpkin spice smoothie is creamy, lightly sweet and filled with the perfect blend of fall flavors. Plus, it packs a gut-healthy punch — probiotics from the yogurt, prebiotics from the almond milk and banana, and fiber from the banana and pumpkin.
Your whole family will love kicking off their morning with a pumpkin spice smoothie, and you’ll know they’re getting some wholesome, gut-healthy nutrition in, too. It’s a win-win!
- ½ frozen banana
- ½ cup vanilla greek yogurt
- ½ cup pumpkin puree
- ½ cup vanilla almond milk
- ½ teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
- Place all ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth.
